It’s likely you’ve heard stories of people who have sought out credit repair companies for assistance to improve their low credit score, but have instead been ripped off by credit repair scams. To learn what pathway to take to protect yourself against such unscrupulous people|these scammers|these crooks}, you must be aware of how they function.
They’re all too aware of that those unfortunates who are over their heads in debt are in such desperate straits as to grasp at anything they are told, in the hope that these fake agencies are really able to help them, so they can regained their serenity. They will often be so disheartened by the system, which is downright cruel to those who have poor credit, that they’ll take desperate measures to get it fixed.
Most people looking for help are thinking about declaring bankruptcy. These are the people who are most vulnerable to credit repair scams.
The reason? Because they feel a sense of urgency, and are unable to internalize the fact that solving their credit problems can take up to 12 months. Very often, these folks feel like time is running out on them, and unless they take action right now, disaster awaits them in the future. Ironically, when they sign up with these company’s instead of solving their financial problems, they will find themselves in even worse financial straits, because they’ve been chasing a mirage.
Here are the warning signs that point to credit repair scams:
1. They promise impossible results – many of these agencies promise they will have all the negative remarks removed from your credit report. They will guarantee you that your credit score will improve within 2 or 3 months.
They try to make this happen by disputing everything negative in your report. The credit reporting agencies may initially remove some or most of the disputed items that they can’t verify within the required 30 days. In the meantime, it will seem that this fraudulent agency has delivered on its promise.
But if the credit bureaus is later able to verify the negative items, they will be back on your report – plus you will have earned the reputation of being a hustler!
2. They play fast and loose with the rules – they actually break the law with their tactics, such as using other people’s identity to increase your overall credit, by offering to give you a new SSN, so that you can “start from scratch.”
Look out! Such tactics will only land you into more trouble. It’s not only against the law to take up a “new” SSN, the number could have a police record attached to it, or any such things that will be much worse than bad credit.
3. They ask for full payment up front – a good many credit repair scams are characterized by the fact that they ask for their fees in full up front. This is understandable, because they know you will find out that they cannot really remove bad credit or improve your credit score as quickly as they claimed. And at that point, they won’t get paid.
It’s entirely possible to avoid credit repair scams. Just keep in mind that no matter how desperate your situation, don’t ignore the warning signs!
